I've had this conversation more times than I can count. A plumber, roofer, or HVAC tech tells me their website is fine. It has their number on it. It loads. They paid somebody to make it a few years back.

Then I search their service category in their city and they're not in the first three results. Sometimes they're not on the first page at all.

That's the problem. Not the website itself. Where it sits.

When someone's heat stops working at 7pm on a Thursday, they're not going to your website directly. They don't know your name. They're typing "HVAC repair near me" and clicking the first business that shows up with reviews and a phone number they can tap. If you're not in that map pack, they call someone else. You never even got a chance.

Here's what's actually driving those top three spots:

Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website for local search. It's the listing with your hours, photos, and reviews that shows up on the map. Most service businesses have one sitting half-finished, with an old phone number and reviews from 2019. That's a problem. Google uses it to decide who to recommend locally, and an incomplete profile is a signal that you're not paying attention.

Reviews compound over time. If you have 18 reviews and your competitor has 180, customers are choosing your competitor on every search where you both show up. The fix is straightforward: ask every satisfied customer directly, right after the job, with a link. Most people will do it if you make it easy. Most businesses never ask.

Your website needs to work on a phone. Over 70% of local service searches happen on mobile. If your site loads slowly, hides the phone number at the bottom, or doesn't tap-to-call, you're losing people the second they land. They bounced before they saw anything about your company.

None of this is complicated. Most trade businesses are exceptional at the work and have almost no systems on the lead generation side. The competitors that do dominate locally. Usually because the bar is low enough that showing up consistently is enough.
